Restoring ecological functions and improving economic conditions in the McKenzie River basin.
South Fork McKenzie Floodplain Enhancement Phase II
Project Type: Aquatic
Project Size: 60 acres
Started: 06-2019
Completed: 08-2019
Amount: $81,538
Funding: 7-Thin Retained Receipts
Description: Restore habitat for threatened Upper Willamette River Spring Chinook and bull trout through the implementation of a large-scale, multi-phase project focused on improving natural processes and functions within the lower South Fork McKenzie River below Cougar Dam on Forest Service property.
Dehne & Sullivan (PWP)
Project Type: Riparian
Project Size: 2.85 acres
Started: 01-2019
Completed: EST. 12-2020
Amount: $20,000
Funding: 7-Thin Retained Receipts
Description: Riparian restoration (invasive plant species removal and native tree and shrub planting) on two private properties in the lower McKenzie Sub-basin as part of the Pure Water Partners program.
Finn Rock Reach Infrastructure
Project Type: Aquatic
Project Size: NA
Started: EST. 06-2021
Completed: EST.08-2021
Amount: $10,000
Funding: 7-Thin Retained Receipts
Description: Replacemultiple failing culverts across side channels. This project was amended to develop the infrastructure for staging in-steam trees for placement.
Green Mountain EIS Road Decommissioning
Project Type: Roads
Project Size: 3.74 miles
Started: 01-2019
Completed: EST. 12-2024 (prior to contract termination)
Amount: $10,042
Funding: Ridge Required Work
Description: The Green Mountain EIS area has designated roads for decommissioned and closed to vehicular access. This will decrease the current effective open road density, reduce existing road erosion problems, and reduce road maintenance costs. Roads closed by the project will be left in a hydrologically stable condition to protect water quality. These roads will be closed/stored or decommissioned with subsoiling, berms, and water bars in 2025 prior to the Ridge STWD Contract termination.
Quartz EA Road Decommissioning
Project Type: Roads
Project Size: 9.84 miles
Started: 01-2019
Completed: EST. 12-2026 (prior to contract termination)
Amount: $26,313
Funding: WQ Required Work
Description: These roads are identified within the Quartz Project EA area to be decommissioned and closed to vehicular access. This will decrease the current effective open road density, reduce existing road erosion problems, and reduce road maintenance costs. Roads closed by the project will be left in a hydrologically stable condition to protect water quality. These roads will be closed/stored or decommissioned with subsoiling, berms, and water bars in 2025, prior to the WQ STWD Contract termination.
WQ Stewardship Fireline Construction
Project Type: Fuels
Project Size: 1.9 miles
Started: est. 2025
Completed: est. 12/2026 (prior to contract termination)
Amount: $10,032
Funding: WQ Required Work
Description: This work is required to facilitate the fuels treatment for the selected subdivisions as analyzed in the Quartz Project EA. Specific technical specifications are supplied in the WQ Stewardship Contract and are to meet the Desired Future Conditions as displayed in the offeror’s technical proposal. This work will be completed prior to the WQ STWD Contract termination.
South Fork Floodplain Monitoring
Project Type: Aquatic Monitoring
Project Size: NA
Started: 05-2020
Completed: EST. 06-2021
Amount: $26,876
Funding: GNA Program Revenue
Description: The South Fork McKenzie River (South Fork) is a tributary to the McKenzie River near the community of Blue River in Lane County Oregon. The US Forest Service (USFS) and McKenzie Watershed Council (MWC) completed two phases of restoration on the South Fork in 2018 and 2019 and intend to implement additional phases by 2025. Funding from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) through Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) will support the collection of juvenile spring Chinook salmon monitoring data by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). GNA supported monitoring compliments a long-term monitoring project to examine the ecological and geomorphic responses large-scale valley bottom restoration to “Stage 0” condition on the South Fork. Partners include the USFS Pacific Northwest Research Station, USFS Willamette National Forest, ODFW, Oregon State University, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and MWC.
Deer Creek Monitoring
Project Type: Aquatic Monitoring
Project Size: NA
Started: 05-2020
Completed: EST. 12-2021
Amount: $24,237
Funding: GNA Program Revenue
Description: Deer Creek is a tributary to the McKenzie River, near the community of
McKenzie Bridge in Lane County, Oregon. The US Forest Service (USFS) and McKenzie Watershed Council (MWC) began restoration on Deer Creek in 2016 with intended implementation of additional phases in 2020 and 2022. Funding supported the collection and analysis of remotely sensed and field survey data in 2020 and 2021, and the collection and analysis of macroinvertebrate samples in 2020. Monitoring is done in collaboration with biological surveys and transect surveys with the intent to determine the effects of restoration efforts and assess geomorphic change over time qualitatively and quantitatively. Partners include the MWC, ODF, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Upper Willamette Soil and Water Conservation District, and the USFS.
